100 Ton Gun

  • Routes: 10 9 3 4

The 100-ton gun was a massive artillery piece that was once located on the Rock of Gibraltar, officially known as the Armstrong 100-ton gun, installed in Gibraltar in the late 19th century. It was one of the largest and most powerful guns of its time. Manufactured by Sir William Armstrong & Company, the gun was designed to serve as a strategic defence of British territory and its naval base. The gun had a weight of approximately 100 tons and was mounted on a hydraulic carriage. It fired projectiles weighing around 1,800 pounds (816kg) with a range of up to 10 miles (16km). The enormous firepower of the gun made it a formidable defensive weapon.

During its operational years, the 100-ton gun played a significant role in Gibraltar's defence. It was part of the extensive network of fortifications and artillery batteries positioned along the coastline. However, as military strategies changed the gun became obsolete and disarmed by 1906 but was kept in the same position, although the hydraulic mechanical parts were removed from the battery. Today, the 100-ton gun stands at the Napier of Magdala Battery by Rosia Bay serving as a reminder of Gibraltar's military history and the strategic importance it held for the British Empire.
