St. Michael's Cave is a natural limestone cavern located within the Rock of Gibraltar. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Gibraltar due to its impressive formations and fascinating history. The cave has a rich and diverse history, dating back thousands of years. It is believed that the cave was used by early humans and Neanderthals as a shelter during prehistoric times. Over the centuries, it has also served various purposes, including as a military hospital during World War II and as a concert venue for orchestral performances and other cultural events.

One of the main draws of St. Michael's Cave is its stunning interior. The cavern is adorned with magnificent stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique limestone formations, creating a visually captivating environment. The natural acoustics within the cave amplify sound, adding to its allure as a concert venue. The cave is accessible to visitors, and guided tours are available to explore its chambers and learn about its geological and historical significance. The pathways wind through different sections of the cave, revealing its intricate formations and offering insights into its formation over thousands of years.

St. Michael's Cave is not only a natural wonder but also an important part of Gibraltar's cultural heritage. Its beauty and historical importance make it a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike, providing an enchanting experience that showcases the wonders of nature hidden within the depths of the iconic Rock of Gibraltar.

With the Hopper bus ticket you can use any of the Routes available in Gibraltar as many times as you need throughout the day.

Since St. Michael’s cave is located in the upper rock, the easiest way to access the upper rock nature reserve is by taking the cable car from the base station close to the Alameda Gardens. Once at the top you will need to take a downhill walk of approximately 20 min to reach the St. Michael’s Cave entrance.

There are various bus Routes that will take you to the Cable Car base Station. If you have come in through the frontier or have arrived on a flight to Gibraltar airport, or even have stopped at Gibraltar Port on a cruise liner, and have purchased our hopper bus ticket, you can get the Citibus Route 5 or Route 10 straight into the market place in the town centre where you can then jump on to the connecting Routes.

If you catch Route 2, Route 3 or Route 7, your closest bus stop to the Cable Car will be Elliott’s Way right by the Italian Restaurant Mamma Mia, only a few metres away from the Cable Car Base Station.

The other two bus Routes available that will take you right to the Cable Car are Routes number 4 and 9, the bus stop you must look out for, is called Alameda House, and stops just outside the Cable Car base Station. All these Routes are available from Market Place which is the central bus station and main connection point, but if you opt to walk around town centre along Main Street, there are other bus stops throughout the outskirts of the town city centre where you will also be able to jump on to these bus Routes.
