City Under Siege Exhibition

  • Routes: 10 1

Throughout history, Gibraltar has been a strategically important location due to its position at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea. This has made it a coveted territory for various powers, resulting in several sieges and military conflicts.

One of the most notable sieges occurred during the 18th century when the Spanish and French forces besieged Gibraltar from 1779 to 1783. Known as the Great Siege of Gibraltar, it was a significant chapter in the territory's history. The British successfully defended the Rock against relentless attacks, enduring hardships and demonstrating great resilience. During the Great Siege and subsequent conflicts, the inhabitants of Gibraltar faced harsh living conditions, scarcity of resources, and constant bombardments. The fortifications and tunnels within the Rock played a crucial role in their defense, offering shelter and strategic advantages.
