O'Hara's Battery

  • Routes: 10 9 2 3 4 7

O'Hara's Battery is a historic artillery battery located on the upper slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar. Named after General Charles O'Hara, who served as Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the battery played a significant role in Gibraltar's defense and military history. Constructed during the late 19th century, O'Hara's Battery was designed as part of Gibraltar's coastal defense system. Its strategic position provided commanding views over the Strait of Gibraltar and allowed for the effective protection of the territory and its naval base.

The battery housed a series of large artillery guns that were capable of delivering powerful long-range fire. It served as a deterrent to enemy ships and played a crucial role in defending Gibraltar during times of conflict. Today, O'Hara's Battery stands as a well-preserved historic site and offers visitors a glimpse into Gibraltar's military past. Guided tours and exhibits provide insights into the battery's construction, armament, and its significance in Gibraltar's defense strategy.

Visitors to O'Hara's Battery can explore the gun emplacements, observation points, and underground chambers. The site offers stunning views of the surrounding area, including the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the town below. O'Hara's Battery serves as a testament to Gibraltar's military heritage and the strategic importance of the Rock throughout history. It provides an opportunity to learn about the fortifications and defensive systems that protected the territory and offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's past.

With the Hopper bus ticket you can use any of the Routes available in Gibraltar as many times as you need throughout the day.

Since O’Hara’s Battery is located at the highest peak of the rock of Gibraltar, the easiest way to access the upper rock nature reserve is by taking the Cable Car from the base station close to the Alameda Gardens. Once at the top you will need to walk to O’Hara’s Battery and any other Gibraltar Attractions you choose to.

There are various bus Routes that will take you to the Cable Car base Station. If you have come in through the frontier or have arrived on a flight to Gibraltar airport, or even have stopped at Gibraltar Port on a cruise liner, and have purchased our hopper bus ticket, you can get the Citibus Route 5 or Route 10 straight into the market place in the town centre where you can then jump on to the connecting Routes.

If you catch Route 2, Route 3 or Route 7, your closest bus stop to the Cable Car will be Elliott’s Way right by the Italian Restaurant Mamma Mia, only a few metres away from the Cable Car Base Station.

The other two bus Routes available that will take you right to the Cable Car are Routes number 4 and 9, the bus stop you must look out for, is called Alameda House and stops just outside the Cable Car base Station.

All these Routes are available from Market Place which is the central bus station and main connection point, but if you opt to walk around town centre along Main Street, there are other bus stops throughout the outskirts of the town city centre where you will also be able to jump on to these bus Routes.
