Pillars of Hercules

The Pillars of Hercules is a legendary and iconic geographical feature associated with Gibraltar. The Pillars of Hercules refer to two headlands that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea. In classical mythology, they were believed to have been created by the mythical hero Hercules as a commemoration of his great strength and a marker of the edge of the known world.

The Rock of Gibraltar, located on the European side, is traditionally identified as one of the Pillars of Hercules. Rising majestically from the peninsula, it forms a striking natural landmark that has held significant strategic and symbolic value throughout history. The other pillar, sometimes identified as Jebel Musa in modern-day Morocco, lies across the strait on the African continent. Together, these two pillars represent the westernmost extent of the ancient Mediterranean world.

If you happen to come in through the frontier or arrive on a flight to Gibraltar airport, and have purchased our hopper bus ticket, you can get the Citibus Route 5 or Route 10 straight into the market place in the town centre where you can then jump on the connecting Route 2 or 7. Once you are on bus number 2, your closest bus stop to the Pillars of Hercules is at Garrison Gym bus stop, followed by an uphill walk of an extra 15-20 min to your final destination. If instead you jump on Route 7 citibus, your stop will be at Mount Alvernia Terminus, which will then allow you to have a nice walk into the Nature Reserve and is only 10-15 minutes away from the Pillars of Hercules. 

If you are a cruise liner passenger and prefer to use the public bus routes with the special hopper ticket, you can also either walk to central market place which is only a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise port, or get the Citibus Route 5 or 10 which will take you to market place where you can then connect to Route 2.
